Freedom of opinion, freedom of religion and the right to property

Fundamental rights are rights that every person has in relation to the state. They are in the Federal Constitution. The state must respect and protect them. It may only restrict them if there is a law and an important public reason for it. Most fundamental rights apply to all people in Switzerland, including foreigners. Without them, nobody could hold their own political opinion without fear.

Important fundamental rights are freedom of expression and information: I may say what I think and get information freely. Freedom of religion and conscience is also called religious freedom: I may freely choose and practise my religion, or have none. There is also freedom of assembly and the guarantee of property. The guarantee of property protects personal property.

Many wishes are not fundamental rights. There is no fundamental right to a home, a job, the internet, Wi-Fi, television or pets. Owning weapons is not a fundamental right either; it is strictly regulated in the Weapons Act. But this is guaranteed: compulsory school is free of charge. And anyone in need has a right to help for the bare necessities.
