Cities, airport, population

More people live in the canton of Zurich than in any other canton. The learning brochures give 1.5 million (as of 2020). Since then the population has continued to grow: at the end of 2025 there were around 1.63 million. Almost one fifth of all people in Switzerland live here. Many people come to the city of Zurich every day to work.

The capital of the canton is the city of Zurich. It is also the largest city in Switzerland, with over 400'000 inhabitants. The second-largest city in the canton is Winterthur, with over 100'000 people. Uster comes third. Zug, Cham, Baden and Wettingen are not in the canton of Zurich.

Zurich Airport is the largest airport in Switzerland. It is not in the city of Zurich, but north of it in the municipality of Kloten. That is why it is sometimes also called «Kloten Airport». Kloten belongs to the district of Bülach. From the airport it takes around 10 minutes by train to Zurich main station.
