Coat of arms, location and neighbouring cantons

The canton of Zurich is in the north of Switzerland, in the Plateau (Mittelland). The Plateau is the flat to hilly area between the Jura and the Alps. Most people in Switzerland live here. On the map you find Zurich at the top in the middle, shifted a little to the right. In the north the canton borders on Germany; the border is partly formed by the Rhine.

Zurich borders on 6 cantons: in the north on Schaffhausen, in the east on Thurgau and St. Gallen, in the south on Schwyz and Zug, in the west on Aargau. Lucerne, Glarus and Fribourg are not neighbours of Zurich. In addition there is the border with Germany in the north. Lake Zurich is mostly in the canton of Zurich; a small part belongs to Schwyz and St. Gallen.

The coat of arms of the canton of Zurich is divided diagonally into white and blue. The line goes from top left to bottom right. The top right field is white, the bottom left is blue. There is no animal and no cross in the coat of arms. Other coats of arms look similar: Lucerne is divided vertically into blue and white, Zug is white with a blue horizontal bar, Ticino is vertically red and blue.
